Antone Barrett, 86, of New Bedford died March 11, 2019 peacefully at St. Luke's Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Carl and Virginia (Nunes) Barrett, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was formerly employed by Fairhaven Lumber for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Barrett was a founding member of the Young Cape Verdean Athletic Association. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading crime novels.
He was a devoted family man who loved his family and looked forward to family gatherings.
Survivors include his former wife, Jean (DeBarros) Barrett of Richmond, VA; a son, Antone "Kippy" Barrett and his wife Joyce of New Bedford; a daughter, Lynette Lopes of Richmond, VA; 4 sisters, Mary Baptiste, Gloria Gomes and Lorraine Ferguson and her husband Roland, all of New Bedford, and Vivian Pina of West Wareham; 8 grandchildren, Virginia and her husband Kennard and David and his wife Tia, all of Richmond, VA, Nakita and her husband Haywood, Kristen, Lindsey and her husband Marco, Jillian and her husband Brent, Kelsey and Shelby; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the father-in-law of the late David Lopes, brother of the late Paul Barrett, Joseph Barrett and Grace DeBarros and the brother-in-law of the late Harold Gomes, Joseph Baptiste, John Pina, Jr., William DeBarros, Anna Barrett and Elizabeth Barrett.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
