Antonio Gusmão Ferreira, 89, of New Bedford, MA passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, March 11, 2019. Born on August 4, 1929 on the island of São Nicolau, Cabo Verde, António immigrated to New Bedford with his family in 1977.
António had a career as the Associate Director of Finances in Guiné Bissau, West Africa, before immigrating to the United States. He worked as a finance officer for Onboard before being employed by UMass, Dartmouth as a food service worker until his retirement.
António was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He adored spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He was a huge soccer fan who played in his youth and served as a coach for two soccer clubs in New Bedford. He enjoyed traveling and spending vacations with his wife, of 58 years, Vicência Duarte Ferreira. The places that they spent many special moments were in their native country of Cabo Verde, as well as Portugal.
António was the cherished son of the late João Baptista Ferreira and Ana Lopes Ferreira. António is survived by his wife, Vicência Duarte Ferreira, his siblings Maria de La Salete Ferreira, Aguinaldo Ferreira, Alda Dos Santos, and Edla De Brito; his children Clóvis Ferreira and his wife Lee, Amarildo Ferreira, Sid Ferreira and his wife Isabel, Adónis Ferreira and his wife Nádia, Débora Ferreira and her partner Tyson, and Temistocles Ferreira and his wife Nancita; and his grandchildren Stefan, Jamila, Alexander, Cid, Seige, IanI, Soul-Jah, Phoenix, Onyx, Zidan, Ra-Star, Zahra and Aura.
His family will greet friends on Wednesday, March 13, from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, MA.
