Joseph Lopes Almeida, 85, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday March 5, 2019.
Born on March 18, 1933 in Sao Nicolau, Cabo Verde as a U.S. citizen, Joe immigrated to the United States in 1949 where he lived in New Bedford most of his life. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean War. He had a long career as a Head Baker at Fernandes Supermarket. Joe loved gardening, playing practical jokes, and spending time with family.
He was the beloved son of the late Antonio Almeida and Maria Lopes Almeida. He is predeceased by his wife, Doreen Blake Almeida.
Joe is survived by his loving companion, Bernice Livramento; his sister, Ida Almeida Tolentino; his four children, Suzanne Almeida-Shepherd, Anthony Almeida, Lainey Almeida, and Erin Almeida-Junier; nine grandchildren, Faithe, Sara, Mariel, Zachary, Isaiah, Maya, Zimri, Mateo and Ari; three great-grandchildren, Ayda, Theodore and Archer; and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren.
His family will greet friends on Sunday, March 10, from 3-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His funeral procession will form on Monday, March 11, at 8 AM at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 9 AM at Our Lady of Assumption Church, 47 South Sixth St., New Bedford.
