Our family lost our matriarch and a beautiful soul on Monday February 11, 2019. Lena Lopes passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at her home in Beaumont, Texas.
Lena was born on March 3, 1924 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Lena married Abel Lopes, also of New Bedford, in 1949. She opened Lena's Variety on Park Street where she was a pillar of the community.
She was predeceased by her husband Abel, her parents, Manuel and Maria Monteiro; her brothers, Gauldion, James, Manuel, and Thomas Monteiro; her sisters, Lydia Araujo and Augusta Livramento; and her daughter, Anita Lopes.
She is survived by five children, Jacqueline Lopes of Florida, Elaine Lopes of California, Robert Lopes and his wife Joanne of New Bedford, Lynn Jenkins and her husband Earvin of Texas, and Barbara
Lopes-Robinson of New Bedford; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Lena lived a wonderfully happy and fulfilled life.
Her family will greet friends on Sunday Feb. 24th from 2-5 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her funeral service at 5 PM. Her funeral procession will form on Monday Feb. 25th at 8:30 AM at the funeral home followed by committal prayers at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at 10 AM.
