SPRINGFIELD ~ Richard J. “Radar” O’Connor, 72, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, February 15, 2019. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on December 20, 1946, a beloved son of the late Edward and Lucy (Gallo) O’Connor. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the High School of Commerce in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was employed for 39 years by the Springfield Department of Public Works and retired in March of 2008. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. Most of all, he was a quiet man who loved his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Mary T. (Bosworth) O’Connor. They were married on May 4, 1974 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 44 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Richard J. O’Connor, Jr. and Lori A. Bond and her husband, David, all of Springfield; his cherished grandson whom he adored, Aiden Michael Bond; his brother, John P. O’Connor; his sister, Joanne O’Connell; and his many nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended members of the O’Connor and Bosworth families. Beside his parents, he was also predeceased by three brothers and a sister, Edward, Michael and Joseph O’Connor and Mary Godet. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or to the College of Our Lady of the Elms, 291 Springfield Street, Chicopee, MA 01013.
