Jacobus M. Vermeulen, 79, of Woonsocket died Friday February 15, 2019 at Landmark Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Lorraine (Beaudry) Vermeulen who passed away in 1997.
Born in the Netherlands Mr. Vermeulen came to the United States at the age of 15. He lived for several years in New Jersey and Georgia and was a resident of Woonsocket for over 50 years.
Mr. Vermeulen was employed in the local textile industry and worked at JC Lafond weaving prior to retiring.
Jacobus was a cheese aficionado having vivid memories of the homemade cheeses of his native Netherlands. As a talented cook, special memories of his culinary creations include egg drop soup. As an avid fisherman on both saltwater and freshwater locations he brought home many “sea creatures” and would “go to town” preparing a true fisherman’s feast from start to finish. In his spare time he liked to watch cooking shows and following the action of wrestling shows. He was a skilled pool player. A talented wood carver Jacobus brought this talent with him from the Netherlands. He carved such masterful pieces as authentic Dutch wooden shoes and just magnificent models of sailing ships, a testament to his love of the sea and all things nautical. His love of the outdoors extended to hunting in the local area.
Jacobus will be remembered for his many talents. He cherished the simple things in life. Ever proud of his Dutch heritage he was happy to have made a life for himself and his family in America.
He is survived by two daughters Bonnie J. Drolet and her husband Greg and Candie Vermeulen and his granddaughter Emily Drolet all of Woonsocket.
His funeral service will be Tuesday February 19, 2019 at 7:00 pm in the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket. Visiting hours are from 5-7 pm prior to the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Slatersville Congregational Church, 25 Green St. Slatersville, RI. 02876.
