Philip P. McManus, Jr., 83, of New Bedford died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 unexpectedly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Rosemary (Raphael) McManus.
Born in Fall River, son of the late Philip McManus and Jennie (Pendrake) Wojtaszek, he lived in Florida and New Bedford for most of his life.
Philip enrolled at Bryant College, where he attended until enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1955. While in the service he was assigned to the USAF Security Service for 4 1/2 years, serving in the Far East, Japan, and Turkey. After returning to the United States in 1960 he was assigned to Strategic Air Command in Oklahoma, where he served until being honorably discharged in 1963.
Upon his return home from the service, Philip began his business career with Metropolitan Life Insurance in 1964 as a debit agent before being promoted to insurance consultant and later to insurance consultant manager. He left insurance in 1972 to work for the New Bedford Standard-Times before moving to Florida in 1978. In Florida, he was employed as an Associate with C.A.S. Auto, M.G.M. Motors for 17 years until his retirement in 1996.
In retirement, he returned to New Bedford where he and his wife lived in the Fort Taber area. He enjoyed walking the beach. He was an avid sports fan who loved the Atlanta Braves, New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed spending time with his eight grandchildren and visiting Cape Cod on weekends.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; three children, Michael McManus, Christine Ward, and Lynn Lisinski; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Paul M. McManus.
His Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 1, 2019 at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
