Theolinda C. (Costello) Mendes, 87, of Olympia Towers, New Bedford died Saturday December 24, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Edward Mendes.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Antonio and Annie (Brown) Costello, she lived in Dartmouth and New Bedford for most of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
Mrs. Mendes was formerly employed as a nurse's aide at Hallmark Nursing Home until her retirement.
She was an active member of the Olympia Towers Bingo Club, Glee Club, and Social Club. She was a former member of the Young Women's Christian Association, and a former member and President of the Sunshine Group. She loved attending family gatherings and going out to eat.
Survivors include three daughters, Jane Dube and her husband Antoine of East Freetown, Michele Andrews and her husband Bradford of New Bedford, and Brenda Rieschick of San Diego, California; two sons, Russell Mendes of Dartmouth and Edward Mendes, Jr.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a niece.
She was the grandmother of the late Jeffrey Mendes and sister of the late Edward Costello.
Her Memorial Mass will be held on Friday December 30, 2005 at 10 AM in St. Lawrence Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Tuesday Dec. 27, 2005 from 4-7 PM.
