Obituary

Roberta June Messick, 80, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Pruitt Health in Ocilla, Georgia.

Memorial services will be held 10 AM, Sunday, February 3, 2019, at The Gathering Place in the Bowen’s Mill Community, with pastors and family sharing memories. All family and friends are invited to attend.

Mrs. Messick was born March 28, 1938, in Syracuse, New York, to the late Robert Armstrong & Dorothy Harris Hough. She served her country honorably in the United States Army Nursing Corps during the Cuban Crisis. Mrs. Messick received her nursing training at Fort Mills, Kentucky and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, along with her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Miami. She served as a midwife at Baltimore City Hospital and Down State Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Mrs. Messick was a Missionary for Christ in Columbia, South America and taught at home and at a Christian school in Duluth, Minnesota. She was a member of Bowens Mill Christian Fellowship, moving to the community in 1987. Mrs. Messick was a Registered Nurse at Care One Home Health, Irwin County Hospital and Life Care Center.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, James O. Messick of Fitzgerald; children: Esther & Chad Linden of Canby, California, John Michael & Mary Susan Messick of Fitzgerald and Stefanie & Erastus Karuri of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Aster “Grace” Linden, Samantha Nichols, Ashton Messick, Robert “Robbie” Messick; Kevin, Daniel, and Anna Karuri; and a sister, Rosemary Jean Barton of Clearwater, Florida. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Robert Messick; twin granddaughters: Stephanie Lynn Messick and Michaela June Messick; and a sister, Marjorie Carson.
