Obituary


Norma McVannan Kulo of the Carriage House at the Elms, Westerly, formerly of Seneca Drive, Noank and Hempstead Street, New London died on December 23rd before she woke, after an extended struggle with Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Kulo was born in Wellesboro, PA on November 27, 1919 to the late John and Ora (Bonnell) McVannan, and raised in Endicott NY. She was the beloved wife of Peter V. Kulo who predeceased her in 1972. She was also predeceased by her brother Donald McVannan of Endicott.

She is survived by children and their spouses Jeffrey and Susan Kulo of Ledyard and Leslie and Jack Grispino of Niantic, children Elissa Elaine Speer of Norwich, Eileen Bonnell Kulo of Cromwell and Scott Peter Kulo. Her grandchildren are Sheri Speer and Justin, Benjamin, and Alison Kulo. She also leaves two great-grandchildren, Amber and Brendan Cote.

Norma was a longtime employee of Burlington Coat Factory and before that, The Outlet Company, both formerly in New London. She was an extraordinary cook and made wonderful pies and cookies. She kept a beautiful home and had a tremendous sense of humor and wit. She greatly enjoyed traveling to New York City for Broadway shows. She starred in local theater in her younger days in upstate New York. Liberace was a great friend of hers. She and her husband won many dance awards. She had a career in the newspaper business before her marriage on July 27, 1946. She will be lovingly remembered by family and friends.

Her family is grateful to the caring staff at the Carriage House for their devotion to Norma.

Her family will greet relative sand friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday from 6-8pm. Her funeral will be conducted on Thursday at 11am with burial following at Elm Grove Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to your local Alzheimers Association or to the Alzheimers Association, RI Chapter, 245 Waterman Street, Providence RI.
