Mildred L. “Millie” Bowker, age 93, of Brockton, died January 8, 2019 at Boston Medical Center. Millie was the loving wife of the late Robert N. Bowker. Lifelong of Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Dale M. and Evelyn D. (Robinson) Nelson. She was a 1943 graduate of Brockton High School, and was most proud of graduating from Bridgewater State College with a BS degree in Education in 1987, while in her 60’s. She worked at the Downey School as a Teacher’s Assistant from 1974-1986 and was a substitute teacher in Brockton, Bridgewater and Hanson, retiring in 1991.
Millie had been a volunteer at the Brockton Council on Aging, member of Brockton Swinging Singers, Christ the King Choir, host mom to foreign exchange students from Venezuela, Spain and Columbia, and a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed reading, walking, downhill and X-country skiing, traveling in an RV across the country with her husband Bob, and “snow birding” in Umatilla for eight years, until Bob’s illness in December 2017. Millie was quiet but powerful with incredible faith. She loved her family and life and brought happiness to all she met.
Millie is survived by her children Carol Bradford of Middleboro, Patricia Crooker of Brockton, Jeanne Bowker of Brockton, Michael Bowker of Palm Coast, FL, Mary Bowker of Jackson, WY, and Karen Bishop of Hooksett, NH. As well as 13 grandchildren and two brothers, Richard Nelson and Ray Nelson.
Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton, Thursday, January 17, 4-7pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Friday at 9:30am for a Funeral Mass in Christ the King Church at 10:30am. Burial will be held at a later date in Melrose Cemetery.
