Obituary

Colman Saddington Ives, 101, of Mystic died on January 11, 2019. He was born October 17, 1917 in NYC to parents Edwin I. Ives and Lillian Weekes. He attended Yale University and received a graduate degree in business from Columbia University in NYC. On May 9, 1941 , he married the love of his life, Ethel Marie Mainzer. They were married for 76 years. She predeceased him on Nov. 14, 2018.

Colman served in the Army Signal Corp. during WWII and was recalled to service during the Korean conflict.

Colman was Vice President of Human Resources at Schering Plough from 1947 until retirement in 1980. He was the cofounder of a technical training project in Newark, N.J.in 1966 that trained and provided jobs for under privileged youth.

Colman was a trustee at Talledega College in Alabama from 1968 until 1998. It is Alabama's oldest African America college.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Guild for Spiritual Guidance at Wainwright House in Rye, New York. from 1970 until present.

Colman was very involved with St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Old Lyme Ct. from 1980 until 2010. He was senior warden for 5 years, was a vestry member and led men's retreats. Colman led a men's Christian discussion group from 1980 until 2018.

He enjoyed planning the many trips he and Ethel took traveling abroad and in the U.S.

Colman was an accomplished musician and entertained family and friends for years on his beloved baby grand piano.

Colman is survived by his son Mark C. Ives (Stephanie) of Belle Meade, N.J., Daughters Alison C. Ives of mystic, Ct. and Hillary I. Transue (Andrew) of Block Island, R.I. He will be missed by his grandchildren; Christopher B. Ives, Gregory C. Ives, Jocelyn M. Howard (John), Bain R. Transue (Kaylan) and Carris M. Transue as well as his 4 great grandchildren; Hannah, Jameson, Mac and Rowan.

Our family is greatly indebted to the staff of Avalon Health Care Center for their loving care and kindness. We are also so very grateful to the Center for Hospice Care for their compassionate care.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 2:00pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on 15 Pearl St. in Mystic.
