George Peter (Pete) Nichols
George Peter (Pete) Nichols, 77, of Freedom, NH, died Friday, January 11, 2019, at MMC in Portland, ME, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He had valiantly fought lung cancer for over 2 years, before succumbing to a sudden bout of pneumonia.
Pete was born in Wolfeboro, NH on July 29, 1941 to the late Geo. Everett and Elizabeth/Betty (Lowe) Nichols. He grew up in Freedom, NH, graduated from Kennett High School in 1959, and then entered the Air Force. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for United Airlines for over 33 years before retiring in 1998.
In 1965 Pete married his childhood sweetheart Margaret (Peg) Thurrell. They resided in Illinois, Florida, and New Hampshire over the years.
Pete will be remembered for his big generous heart and his ability to fix almost anything. He was also an avid outdoorsman and a Licensed Hunting Guide in NH who loved to fish, hunt, and ride his motorcycle. The grandchildren will miss Grandpa’s large scoops of ice cream and his determination to spend quality time with each child.
He is survived by Peg, his wife of 53 years, daughters Debra (Mike) Hanson of Rockford, IL, Barbara Nichols (Kip Reynolds) of ME, sister, Nancy Miniutti of Concord, NH, and 6 grandchildren.
Pete will be cremated and a memorial service will be held in July at a date and time to be announced.
