New Bedford – David W. Higgins , age 92, of New Bedford, MA passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospital with his beloved wife at his side on December 15, 2018 due to a period of declining health. He and his wife Fatina (Santangelo) Higgins shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Acushnet, MA, he was the son of David and Ellen (Anderson) Higgins. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Germanyand Switzerland. Upon returning from the war, he attended and graduated from New Bedford Textile Institute and worked in the textile industry. He became employed at Phoenix Dyeworks in Cleveland, Ohio as a Master Dyer and remained there until he retired. He and his wife returned to New Bedford upon retirement.
Survivors include his loving wife Fatina (Santangelo) Higgins of Dartmouth, MA; Step – sons Steven Silvia and his wife Joanne of North Carolina and Marty Silva and his wife Laurel of New Hampshire. He was the beloved “Papa” to grandchildren Jason, Stacey, Erin, Nathan and Heidi and several great grandchildren.
Mrs. Higgins Would like to thank the staff at Hathaway Manor of New Bedford for the compassionate care given to Dave. They were extremely kind and helpful in every way.
His memorial service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, January 10, 2019 beginning at 10:00 A.M. There will be a prayer service beginning at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery with military honors.
