Retired Boston Fire Department Captain, Edward J. "Eddie" Kavanagh, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life suddenly at his home in Charlestown on Friday, December 21, 2018. He was 88 years of age.
Eddie was born in Somerville on November 18, 1930, a son of the late Edward Kavanagh and Mary (Carberry) Kavanagh both formerly of County Waterford, Ireland. Eddie grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. Eddie enlisted into the United States Navy March 3, 1948 and served his country with courage and honor during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on February 27, 1952 with the rank of SH3. Eddie joined the Boston Fire Department on January 18, 1961 and was assigned to Engine 36. He was transferred to Ladder 18 on November 4, 1970, Engine 50 on December 16, 1970, Ladder 15 on October 12, 1977, Engine 10 on August 28, 1982, and Engine 33 on December 4, 1982. He was promoted to Lieutenant on November 4, 1970 while assigned to Engine 10 and Captain on August 25, 1982 while assigned to Engine 33 and Ladder 15. He retired on April 1, 1986 following 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Boston. Eddie was a retired member of Boston Firefighters Union Local # 718 and member of The Halligan Club, The Liars Club and The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association. Eddie enjoyed traveling to Florida during the winter season and was an avid Boston sports fan.
Eddie is the beloved husband of Annette V. (Davis) Kavanagh. He is the devoted father of Patricia Millerick and her husband Kevin, Sheila Kavanagh and the late Edward D. Kavanagh and Thomas M. Kavanagh. He is the loving Gramp to Chuck, Ryan, Patrick and Thomas USMC. He is the beloved brother of Mary Carr, Eileen Jones, retired Boston Fire Department Lieutenant Robert "Bobby" Kavanagh and his wife Janice, Dorothy Gennaco and the late Joan Boyden. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Eddie's Funeral on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 9:30 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10:30 A.M. His burial will be at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne at 2:15 P.M. His visiting hours will be on Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
