New Bedford– Maria J. (Pires) Raposo, age 79, of New Bedford passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Care One in New Bedford with her family at her side. She was the wife of the late John R. Raposo who passed away in 2016 and the daughter of the late Maria da Gloria (Benevides) and Jose Pires.
Maria was born in Santa Cruz, Lagoa Azores, moved to this area in 1968 where she worked as a stitcher for local factories. She loved to cook and her happiest times were spent with her family, especially her grandson.
She is survived by her 2 daughters, Suzanne Arruda and her husband, Paul of Dartmouth and Meagan Raposo of New Bedford; a grandson, Gabriel Arruda of Dartmouth; siblings, Luis Pires and his wife Conceicao of New Bedford and Lucia Ferreira and her husband Mariano of Dartmouth; a sister-in-law, Almerinda Carroca of Portugal; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Maria’s visiting hours will be held Sunday, December 23rd from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Her funeral will be Monday, December 24th beginning in the funeral home at 8:00 A.M. and followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9:00 A.M. Burial will immediately follow in Rural Cemetery.
