George B. Johnson, 94, of Medway passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Medway Country Manor.
George was born on May 26, 1924 in Medway, the second of six children born to Harry T. and Allevina (Benson) Johnson. His father Harry was an entrepreneur, involved in running several businesses and held public positions in Medway. Like his father, George grew up to be an independent thinker, always interested in expanding his education, and pursuing sports, music, travel and adventure.
At age 18, George joined the military and fought in the Philippines. Upon returning home, he attended school at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture. He was then hired by the City of Visalia, California as a planner where, among other things, he designed the Tulare County Courthouse.
George returned to Massachusetts to marry his wife Alice, the new couple moving back to Visalia where their daughter Christine was born in 1955. In 1956 George accepted a planning position near Richmond Virginia where their second daughter, Kimberlee, was born. George returned to Massachusetts, obtained a Master’s Degree in Planning from M.I.T. and continued work in Massachusetts and New Hampshire as a planner, designer, consultant and writer.
Always a good athlete, he excelled in skiing, skating, water skiing, tennis and many other sports. He proudly skied into his late 70’s and stayed active his entire life.
In 2005 George and Alice came full circle, returning to live in Medway where they were surrounded by many relatives and friends. George was preceded in death by his parents, four of his siblings, Virginia Brennan, Francis LeMay, Marjorie Rice and Theodore Johnson, and his daughter Christine Johnson. He is survived by his wife Alice Johnson, his daughter Kimberlee Johnson, his brother Harry Johnson, Jr. and many relatives and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held in the spring in Medway.
