Portsmouth, NH: Howard Axel Gullbrand, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Clipper Harbor Care and Rehabilitation Center. He is survived by Claudia Crafts- his domestic partner and friend of 34 years; 2 daughters- Jay Catanese of Marlboro, MA and Krista Gullbrand of West Palm Beach, Fl; 3 sons- Howard Gullbrand, Jr. of Oxford, MA, Dr. Carl Gullbrand of Portland, Maine, and David Gullbrand of Salem, New Hampshire; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and his former wife Rosamond Gullbrand of Floral City, Florida.
Howard was born in Worcester, MA on October 21, 1924, son of the late Axel and Alma (Groos) Gullbrand. He graduated from Worcester Public Schools and Clark University with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Lamba Chi Alpha Fraternity. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII and earned three Battle Stars and the Bronze Star. He worked for many years as an insurance agent for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Boston, MA. He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester and attended Old South Church in Boston. He was also a member of the VASA Lodge of America's Nordic Lodge #611, Yankee Division Veterans Association, and the 101st Regiment. He was very active in Troop 12 of Boy Scouts of America in Framingham, MA and has three Eagle Scout sons. He was honored to receive the Silver Beaver Award- the highest award for service to the Boys Scouts.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 11 a.m. until 12 noon in Nordgren Funeral Home 300 Lincoln St. Worcester, MA 01605. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon at the funeral home. Burial will follow in All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester with his parents and other relatives that migrated from Sweden in the early 1900's.
