Robert A. Hanna, 82, of Fairhaven, died unexpectedly at home of natural causes on Thursday, November 29, 2018. He was the husband of the late Beverly (Husson) Hanna. He leaves daughters Dawn, Deborah, and Darlene from his first marriage to Beverly Maloney of South Boston; their husbands; and multiple beloved grandchildren of whom he was very proud.
Bob was the son of John Hanna and Dorothy (McConnell) Hanna. He was born in New Bedford in 1936, and moved to the Fields Corner section of Dorchester at age six. There he developed a lasting affection for his friends, the ballpark, and the neighborhood. He also began a lifelong love of reading, wildlife, and the ocean.
After serving honorably in the United States Army and graduating from Suffolk University, Bob made his career as a sportswriter, first for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, and then for the New Bedford Standard Times from 1976 to 2001 and on part-time assignment thereafter. During his career Bob covered championship teams for the Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox, and interviewed Muhammad Ali and other sports legends. He also covered local boxing, running, and high school sports with equal excitement. Bob was a gifted writer who believed in the power of sports to bring people together, and he was a vocal advocate for racial respect and equality in athletics and society. He made a difference, and he will be missed.
Robert’s visiting hours will be held Thursday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Perry Funeral Home. Services will be held during visiting hours. Burial will be private. Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. New Bedford, Ma 02740.
