Joseph H. Barros, 89, of New Bedford died December 2, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Anna M. (Lombard) Barros.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, son of the late Henrique and Martiniana (DaRosa) DeBarros, he lived in New Bedford since 1945.
Mr. Barros was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was formerly employed as a chef and steward for the Exxon Corporation on various tankers until his retirement as chief cook in 1970.
Mr. Barros was a member of the Exxon Annuitant Club.
He served 2 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Barros enjoyed many activities of which boating and fishing was his greatest pastime. He also enjoyed gardening, playing the "cavacinho" with his friends but mostly enjoyed spending time with his beloved wife and family and also with his many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a kind, supportive and loving family man and will be greatly missed.
His family is grateful for the loving care shown him by the ICU and especially the SICU staff at St. Luke's Hospital. Special thanks also to the aides and nurses who took care of him at home.
Survivors include his daughter, Deolinda Foley and her husband Michael of East Freetown; 2 brothers, Edward DeBarros of Dartmouth and Jorge DeBarros of Montana; a sister, Pricilia Crisostomo of New Bedford; 2 grandchildren, Adam Michael Foley and Eric Joseph Foley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Joanne Barros and the brother of the late Viriato DeBarros, John DeBarros, Henrique DeBarros, Jr. and Ana DeBarros.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, December 6th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, December 5th from 4-8 PM.
