SEBAGO- A loving mother, grandmother, Nana, and friend, Barbara Louise Thorne, 99, of Sebago, Maine passed away peacefully at Bridgton Hospital on November 30, 2018. Barbara was a resident of Bridgton Health Care Center for the last three years and the family would like to thank them for the excellent care that she received.
Barbara was born on December 25, 1919 to Florence and Joseph Lord. She was married to Manville Thorne for 53 years until his passing in 1995.
Barbara attended Potter Academy in Sebago. She was a very active member of the Sebago Center Community Church throughout her life and served as the Superintendent of the Sunday School during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1983, she became the Assistant Librarian at Spaulding Memorial Library in Sebago and became Librarian in 1986. She served in this capacity until her retirement at age 88 in 2007. In 2005, the Sebago Lion’s Club honored her with the Outstanding Sebago Citizen’s Award. She also was the Grand Marshall of the Sebago Days parade in 2011. She spent many years helping with the Meals on Wheels program and Senior Luncheons. She was honored with the Boston Post Cane in 2013 as the oldest resident of Sebago.
She is predeceased by her husband, Manville Thorne; six brothers and three sisters; and granddaughter-in-law, Brigitte Osgood. She is survived by her four children - Sharon Osgood and her husband Arthur of Baldwin, Dale Thorne of Sebago, Michael Thorne of Otisfield, and John Thorne of Hiram and former wife Karen Womack-Thorne of Portland; four grandchildren - Steve Osgood and his husband Rick Fritz of San Diego, California, Kevin Osgood of Sebago, Barbie Toye and her husband Ben of Windham, and Leandra Womack and her husband Chris Sullivan of Gorham; and six great grandchildren - Taylor Gardner of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Megan Osgood of Tampa, Florida, Michael Osgood of Sebago, Bryce Womack of Gorham, Lilah Toye of Windham, and Ava Sullivan of Gorham.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2018, from 1PM – 2PM, followed by a 2 PM funeral service at the Sebago Center Community Church located at 403 Bridgton Road (Rt. 107), Sebago, Maine. Refreshments and a gathering of family and friends will follow. An interment service will be held in the Spring.
