Basilio Bulquiren Bides, 86, died peacefully Friday, November 23, 2018 at his home in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Basilio was born May 23, 1932 to Alejo and Esperanza (Bulquiren) Bides in Panay, Capiz, Philippines, the third of seven children. He graduated High School from Philippine Christian College Manila in 1948, after which he pursued Liberal Arts at Tomas Claudio Memorial College, Morong, Rizal, Philippines.
Basilio had been a loyal employee of Reynolds Aluminum Corporation Philippines for over thirty years. During this time, he happened to visit his aunt in Pililla, Rizal and met Minelia Benavidez who became his wife and blessed with seven children. Basi, as he was called, found hardship raising a big family and so he began tending a small-scale duck farm while working at the same time. A very hardworking and responsible husband and father who barely relaxed, a true believer that education is the best legacy he can give to his children.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Minelia Bides; daughters, Esperanza & husband Eduardo Espinola, Leonila Bides, and Imelda Valdriz of New Bedford, MA; sons, Larry & wife Jennifer Bides of Las Vegas, NV, Basilio Jr. & wife Linda Bides of Pililla, Rizal, Phils., Jonathan & wife Lota Bides of Rosetown, Saskatchewan, CA, and Oliver & wife Catherine Bides of Deer Island, CA; sisters, Luisa Aravejo of Panay, Capiz, and Basilisa Benavidez of Pililla, Rizal; grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Nicolas Bides, sisters, Encarnacion Leysa, Candelaria Bides, and Monica Deles.
The family will receive friends from 4:00pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, November 30, 2018 with memorial service at 6:00pm to be led by Pastor of Hope Evangelical Community Church at the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, MA. The interment service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 559 Mount Pleasant St., New Bedford, MA on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 9:00 am.
