Evelyn Garrettporter, age 92, of Sharon, MA was called home to God November 18th. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana; Evelyn was often described as an over achiever, a helper at heart, driven by service to her community and family oriented. Her life accomplishments reflected these traits. After graduating from Crispus Attucks High School, Evelyn was awarded a Voice scholarship to Butler University. While attending, she accepted a sorority bid to Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first Greek-lettered sorority established by African-American college women and remained an active member. Subsequently, Evelyn received her Master’s in Social Work from Antioch College. She moved to Sharon in the 1960’s, where she raised three children as a single parent. She spent the majority of her professional career working in Human Services, primarily with troubled youth. Her career history began with the Department of Youth Services, and culminated with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston Juvenile Court, before retiring as a Probation Officer. Evelyn was very involved in the Women’s Service Club of Boston, one of the oldest African-American philanthropist Women’s Organization in the state. Evelyn loved spending time with family, travelling and singing professionally with three of her sisters, The Garretts, and released several CDs.

Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Friday morning prior to mass from 8:30 to 9:30am. Burial at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton
