Obituary

Betty Jane Calloway Fox, born November 18, 1937 in Newland, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 25. She was married for 60 years to her adoring husband, James Fox, of Whitman where they had made their home and raised their children, Kelly and James, in a home full of love, acceptance and a perfectly set table. Everyone who came into her home was made to feel welcome, especially her son-in-law, Alan Goldberg and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Fox.

An accomplished musician, Betty played clarinet and piano as well as being a vocalist for her high school choir. She was very proud of being the first of three generations of National Honor Society members.

After graduating from Duke University, Betty joined the US Air Force as a radiologic technologist, serving in Texas and Otis Air Base on Cape Cod.

She made radiology her career at a time when few women chose careers in the sciences. She worked at Brockton Hospital for 35 years where her acumen was acknowledged when she was asked to work with physicists from DuPont to help develop mammography techniques. She then devoted the rest of her career to working with women with breast cancer and advocating for women’s health, positively impacting thousands of women.

A woman of many interests and talents, Betty’s red velvet cake was a family favorite and her sense of humor could bring a smile to anyone’s face. She and her husband spent hours in their gardens creating a beautiful space for outdoor family gatherings through the years.

She will also be remembered for her love of music and reading which she passed on to her children and grandchildren Andrew Goldberg, Nicole Fox Hedden and Stephanie Fox. She was a choir director for many years and chose the perfect music for countless weddings, often adding her beautiful soprano voice.

Betty was an active member of the Police Wives Association for many years, quietly organizing many charitable events and programs for people in the community who were less fortunate. She instilled the importance of community service in her children and was proud of the work they do in their community today.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Susie and Vance Calloway and her brother CP Calloway. She is missed by her husband, children and grandchildren as well as many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Family and friends are invited to attend her visiting hours on Monday December 3 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A graveside service and internment will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the charity of your choice in her honor.
