Obituary

Henry J. Barros, 85, of New Bedford died November 20, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of the late Christina (Santos) Barros.
Mr. Barros was born in New Bedford, son of the late John and Louise (Costa) Barros, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. He was awarded the Marian Medal from the Dioceses of Fall River for his many years of service to his parish.
Mr. Barros was formerly employed as a teacher at Roosevelt Junior High School for many years until retirement. He was honored by the faculty and entire staff when the Moby Dick Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society of Roosevelt Junior High School was renamed the Henry J. Barros Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Cape Verdean-American Veterans Association.
Mr. Barros was coordinator of the Cape Verdean Recognition Parade for 18 years.
Survivors include his brother, Manuel J. Barros and his wife Lois of New Bedford; a sister, Charlotte L. Ramos of New Bedford; a sister-in-law, Ann Barros of New Bedford; a brother-in-law, Antone Lopes of Maryland; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Hector J. Barros, John E. Barros, Lucille L. Ramos, Mary L. Lopes, Carol A. Sylvia, and Diane M. Barros and nephew of the late Matilda Lopes.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, November 27th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday, November 26th from 4-7 PM.
