Obituary

Alexander "Smitty" Smith, 78, of Rockport died Saturday, November 17, 2018, at the Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly. He was the son of the late Alexander “Sandy” Smith and the late Nora (Davis) Smith of New Bedford.

He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, eventually assigned to the 52nd Rifle Company. Sandy was a self-employed carpenter who enjoyed his line of work very much. Sandy’s true passion was fishing; an avid tuna fisherman, he was the co-owner of his boat the “Nora Sandy.” He thoroughly enjoyed his fishing excursions with his friends in Rockport.

He is survived by three sisters: Alice Larson, Shirley Smith and Barbara Brennan, all of South Dartmouth. He is predeceased by his siblings: Martha A. Sullivan, Margaret E. O’Neil, Catherine J. Griffin, Mary T. Smith, Eleanora S. Fontaine, Natalie B. Arnett, Peter Smith, Winifred A. Smith and Theresa M. Smith. He was ‘Uncle Sandy’ to forty-three nieces and nephews and even more great nieces and nephews.

Sandy’s family extends their sincere gratitude to Mark Littlefield, both for his loyal friendship and for the wonderful care he provided, especially during Sandy’s period of failing health. Sincere gratitude is also extended to the staff on Farm Unit at Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, for the care provided to Sandy.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 6-8 PM, then meet at St. Lawrence Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM Wednesday November 21, 2018.
