Ethel M. Ives, aged 99, of Mystic, passed away on November 14, 2018. She was born on September 11, 1919 in New York City to parents Adolf John Mainzer and Irma Fritz Mainzer.
She graduated from Barnard College and Columbia University in New York City. On May 9, 1942, she was married to Colman S. Ives.
Throughout her life, she was actively involved in numerous church and community organizations. Pastoral care was a life long commitment. In 1978 she attended the New York Theological Seminary with Colman. In 1980, she earned a Master of Professional Studies in Pastoral Care. In 1987 she joined the staff of St. Ann's Episcopal Church, Old Lyme, as Pastoral Care Coordinator. She served in that capacity for 17 years. Ethel accepted all for who they were and gave unconditional love.
Colman and Ethel traveled extensively through Europe, the Near East, U.S. and Canada.
Ethel is survived by her husband of 76 years, Colman S. Ives, children Mark C. Ives (Stephanie) of Belle Meade, N.J., daughters Alison C. Ives of Mystic, CT and Hilary I. Transue (Andrew) of Block Island, R.I. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Bain R. Transue, Jocelyn R. Howard, Carris M. Transue, Christopher B. Ives and Gregory C. Ives and her 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Dr. Robert. A. Mainzer. The family is greatly indebted to the staff of Avalon Health Care Center for their loving care and kindness.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at 11:00am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic.
