Alfred T. Varney, Jr. of Melrose passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 13 in Elmhurst Nursing Home. Raised and educated in Somerville, he was the son of the late Alfred T. Varney, Sr. and Ann (Scienzo) Varney. Alfred proudly served in the Marine Corps Reserves for six years, and in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, after which he worked at Digital Equipment Corporation, and later as a Network Administrator for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until his retirement. Fred, as he was known by his friends and family was a huge fan of the Boston Bruins and enjoyed collecting hockey cards. He also loved classic Hollywood movies especially ones starring his favorite actor John Wayne.
Alfred was the beloved husband of the late Lois (Bertocchi) Varney. He was the cherished father of Alan Varney and his wife Bonnie Cody of Dallas, TX, and the late Meredith Westgate and her surviving husband William of Melrose. He was the loving grandfather of Ally Westgate, the dear brother of Robert Varney and his wife Ellen of Melrose, Carol Martin of Medford and her late husband Paul, and brother-in-law of Richard and Gail Bertocchi, both of Chatham. Alfred was also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family on Tuesday, November 20, from 4 through 8 PM at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford. At the request of the family, Alfred's funeral services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Alfred's name to the Michael J.
