Everest Smith

“Coach,” “Papa,” and US Marine


Everest Paul Smith, Jr., 85, of Londonderry, NH, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018, surrounded by his loving family in Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH. He was born in Springfield, MA on May 4, 1933, a son of Everest Smith and Jessie Virginia Walsh Barnes. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps. While serving in the military, Everest began a lifelong career of athletic coaching. He began as a basketball coach in the Marine Corps and led the team to victory. Everest coached football at Michigan State College while earning his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology. He also coached varsity football and varsity ice hockey at Burlington High School, Burlington, VT, where he led both teams to two state championships each during the 1970s, and coached hockey at St. Michael’s College, Winooski, VT. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Michael’s College, represented the College as a Vermont Champion Golden Gloves boxer in 1954 and 1955, and was inducted into the St. Michael’s Hall of Fame in 2005. With his wife Lorraine, Everest created the Everest P. Smith, Jr. Endowed Scholarship at St. Michael’s College to benefit engaged and involved students. Everest taught physical education at Edmunds Middle School for 31 years. Everest was an umpire for both high school and college baseball and held the position of VT State Rules Interpreter for many years. He especially enjoyed being the Official Scorekeeper for the Vermont Lake Monsters Minor League Baseball team during the summers for over fifteen years. Everest was an active member of St. Jude Parish in Londonderry (and had been an active member of St. Marks Church in Burlington, VT). He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the St Jude book study group and assisted at the Vacation Bible School. He held many titles in his life but the ones he was most fond of were “Coach” and “Papa”.

He is survived by his two daughters, Karen Boccia and Kristin Smith and husband Nicholas Baer; two sons, Murray Smith and wife Debby and Brian Smith and wife Susan Cohen; son-in-law, James Boccia, nine grandchildren, Nicholas, James and Alyssa Boccia, Marliese, Lili and Elias Baer, William MacKinnon, Rebeccah Edison, and Tim Cohen; four siblings, Carole Goodrich, John Barnes, Thomas Barnes and Kevin Barnes, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Lorraine (Murray) Smith in 2013.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at St. Jude Parish, 435 Mammoth Road, Londonderry. Adoration and Divine Mercy was from 9 – 10am concluding with reciting of the Rosary. An hour of visitation followed from 10 – 11am with a Mass of Christian Burial that began at 11:00am. Cremation followed. Committal services will be on Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Resurrection Park Cemetery, S. Burlington, VT.
