Obituary

Beloved wife and mother, Dr. Vilma Christian, née Solash, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2018 after a long illness. She was by all accounts a very special and gifted woman in many areas. Before moving from Central New Jersey to Evans, Georgia in December 2000, she was a historian and an outstanding high school teacher of the gifted and talented in Social Studies at Marlboro and Central Regional high schools.

She also received a PHD cum laude in Diplomatic History from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her dissertation was titled, “Conflicting Choices”- a chronicle based in the political circumstances that led elements of the Truman Administration’s foreign policy to negotiate with Tito of Yugoslavia but not Mao Tse Tung of China after the end of World War II.

Socially, she was a very engaging person who was welcomed and appreciated by people of all walks of life. With her husband, Arno, she was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta for seventeen years. She leaves behind her husband, Arno Safran; four grown children, Marcus, Eric, Jeremy, and Jaime Jacobson; four grown step children, Paula, Mark, Jordana, and Pete Safran; sixteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

The Unitarian Church is planning a special tribute for Vilma.
