BAR MILLS/HOLLIS- Shirley Margaret (Emmons) Garrigan, age 88, passed away on November 8, 2018 at The Gorham House.
She was born in Hollis on April 26, 1930, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Maxine (Dunn) Emmons. She attended Buxton schools and graduated from S.D. Hanson High School in 1947.
She married George Garrigan on June 19, 1948 and together they had five children. While raising her family, Shirley also worked out of their home. She was known by many for when she worked at the Tory Hill Restaurant. Many patrons enjoyed the Tory Burgers and pies she made.
Shirley always enjoyed cooking, especially making Sunday dinners for her family and dear friends. Many folks enjoyed her famous baked beans.
Shirley also worked at Data General and later at Saco River Telephone.
She never drove a car and always walked everywhere she had to go. People would always comment about how they saw her walking around Bar Mills. She was a lifelong member of TOPS and enjoyed the camaraderie of the group. She enjoyed going to church and reading the Bible.
Shirley loved to shop and never passed an opportunity to go shopping or take bus trips with the Hollis Seniors. She will always be remembered as a great friend who was the first to visit a sick friend, send a card or make a meal. Most of all, Shirley will be remembered for her love of family.
She is predeceased by her husband- George Garrigan who passed away in 2001; a son- Michael Garrigan who passed away in 2008; and a sister- Beverly Meserve.
Shirley is survived by her children- George Garrigan III and his wife Edith of Buxton, Debra Nugent and her husband Michael of NC, Lori Schopen and her husband Kurt of Hollis, and Bruce Garrigan and his fiancé Kristen Hopkins of Arundel; daughter in law- Barbara Garrigan of Dayton; brothers- Waldo Emmons and his wife June of Lyman and Richard Emmons and his wife Jeanne of Buxton; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday Nov. 11, from 5 – 7 PM, followed by a 7 PM funeral service at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton.
