Philip Genova passed away on November 1, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Phil, lovingly known as “Mr. G” to so many, was born in Oneonta NY on Sept 27, 1961. He was an outstanding student, athlete and Eagle Scout, graduating from Lourdes HS in 1978. He earned a BA in political science from Siena College in Loudonville, NY in 1982.
Phil found his true calling as a mentor and teacher. He taught elementary education in the East Lyme and Ledyard, CT school systems, was Assistant Principal at the Gallup Hill Elementary School in Ledyard and ultimately advanced to the role of Director of Special Services for the Ledyard Public School District. Phil was also active in his community as a youth sports coach and as an Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 16.
Phil is survived by his loving parents Frank and Susan (Stevens) Genova of Millbrook NY, and his brother Sgt. Major William F. Genova of Vass, NC. Most importantly, he and Zoe Genova have raised two wonderful sons, Nicholas J. (Nick) and Alexander J. (AJ) Genova of Groton CT.
Phil may be gone from this life, but his legacy of happiness, kindness and compassion lives on in the lives of the many friends, colleagues and especially the young people that he has helped along the way. A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate memorial donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Phil’s name.
