Obituary

Companion, son, brother, uncle, cousin, beloved extended family member and friend to all, Edward “Buster” Costa transitioned into eternal life on October 31, 2018. In his life he was known affectionately as Buster, Bus, Cuz, Unc and other endearments. When you greeted Buster, most of the time, he always had a big smile on his face unless he was annoyed. The love of his life Kathy aka Kathleen would be the first to attest to his annoyance when he would lose patience. But the two of them had a rhythm that allowed them to remained loyal friends and companions for over 25 years. Buster was a very kindhearted and loving person to anyone who needed his help. To know him was to love him and when he loved back, he was as gentle as they come.

Edward Buster Costa was the son of the late Epifanio “Pefon” Costa and Amelia Veiga Youngblood. He is survived by his longtime companion Kathy Silva, his sisters Doreen Sylvia and her husband Donald, and Brenda Summers, stepsister Wendy Depina and her husband Charles, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

After serving in the military, later in life Buster suffered with the side effects brought on by Agent Orange. He endured a great deal of pain and suffering through his first battle with the disease which was solely brought on through his contact with Agent Orange. Buster worked for Polaroid for many years and developed long lasting friendships while there.

Buster was a member of a few organizations such as the Disabled American Veterans in New Bedford, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Onset, where he served as the Commander for several years. He fostered at least two or more young men through transitional periods in their life. He worked with seniors helping them to pay their bills and keep record of their finances. He started the Over 30 Basketball league in New Bedford and was one of the main organizers of his Uncle Manny’s “Manuel E. Costa Sr. Annual Memorial Basketball Tournaments”. He also played a major role during Christmas time in Onset, MA gathering donated gifts for the disadvantaged children in that community. There were numerous other “givings” that Buster was a part of and the people who will remember him, will also remember the goodness of this wonderful human being who we all knew as Buster.

His Funeral Service will be held on Monday Nov. 5th at 11 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial with military honors will follow in Rural Cemetery.
