Amaro Costa Lopes, 89, of New Bedford died Thursday, October 25, 2018 at home surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was the husband of Darci (Duarte) Lopes.
Born in Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde, son of the late Bernardo Costa Figueiredo and Ana Julia Lopes, he lived there for many years. He then moved to Holland for seven years before moving to New Bedford.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Amaro was formerly employed as a housekeeper at St. Luke's Hospital for many years until his retirement.
He enjoyed fishing, listening to music, playing instruments, gardening and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Amaro O. Lopes and Armando Lopes; two daughters, Anna O. Lopes and Ana Bertani and her husband Frank; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Jennie O. Lopes; two sons, Aureliano and Eilidio Lopes; and five brothers.
His Funeral will be held on Monday October 29th at 8 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 9 AM.
