DWYER, Richard E. “Dick” Age 91, of Dedham passed peacefully on January 30, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Marjorie (Swan) Dwyer to whom he had been happily married to for 63 years.
Born in Milton, he was the son of the late Robert and Katherine (Kiley) Dwyer. Dick graduated from Milton High School class of 1944 and proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. Assigned to the USS Wabash in the Pacific Theatre, Dick was a key part of the crew, supporting combat operations in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the Navy he attended John Carroll University and Boston College. Dick then went on to teach Industrial Arts at Dedham High School and South Boston High School. A natural born teacher, with his pleasant disposition and sense of humor, he had the innate ability to inspire students. Dick was recognized for his achievements by being awarded Teacher of the Year in 1972. He then followed his passion as a highly talented finish carpenter. Never ceasing to amaze with his masterful woodworking skills, Dick left a remarkable body of work around greater Boston. Dick’s other passion was inventing. Working diligently out of his garage on nights and weekends, Dick took his visions and developed them into products for the: construction, transportation, and sporting goods industries, receiving U.S. patents on a number of his ideas. A sports enthusiast with a zeal for hockey, Dick volunteered his time building outdoor ice rinks at local schools and family backyards, giving area youth the opportunity to hone their skating and puck handling skills.
He is survived by his wife and children; Robert E. Dwyer (Maryann) of Walpole, Joan Cousar (Charles) of Jacksonville, FL, Jean Dwyer (John) of Andover, and Michael Dwyer (Juliet) of Narragansett, RI, grandchildren; Nicole, Gabriela, Kristen, Katherine, Julia, Caroline, Charlie, Helen, Nick, Kelsey, and Jack, and great-grandchildren; Giuliana and Gemma. He was the brother of the late Phillip, Robert, and Ruth Dwyer, Rosemond Scott, Nan Henderson, and Jean Hoyt. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 3 at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., DEDHAM, from 9:30-10:30am followed by a memorial service beginning at 10:30am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in Milton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
