New Bedford - Maria dos Anjos Lopes passed away on October 19, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. She is the daughter of the late Maria da Conceição Silva and Manuel Medeiros Melo Frade and is survived by her beloved husband Tobias Lopes, her daughter and main care-giver Maria C. Pereira and her son Toby Lopes. She is also survived by her brothers Luis Melo and the late Jose Melo, her grandchildren Marisa, Toby, Kirsten, Andrew and Kenzi who all lovingly referred to her as “vavo”, several godchildren and nieces and a dear family friend Kathleen Besso.
Maria was a selfless wife, mother, grandmother and friend who always put others before herself. Her marriage to her husband was a beautiful example of true love and he continues to call her his “sweetheart” even after her passing. She welcomed everyone into her home with open arms and always insisted that you’d either sit and have something to eat or bring something home with you for later. She loved cooking, gardening, going for walks, watching TV with her husband, praying the rosary and sharing stories of her time living in the Azores with her grandchildren.
Maria Lopes was a beautiful, strong, kind and humble woman. She had a wonderful sense of humor and laughed easily and often. She loved her family unconditionally and was a pillar of strength for them, always finding a way to bring light into the darkest of times. If you ask anyone, they will tell you how she always bragged about her children and grandchildren and how proud she was of each of them. Although her family is heartbroken by Maria’s passing, they find comfort in the many amazing memories they shared with her. As Maria’s husband Tobias puts it, “we will always carry her in our heart.”
Maria’s family would like to thank Alan Weinshel, M.D., Sandy Dias R.N., and the staff at Community Nurse and Hospice Care for their kindness and dedication to keeping Maria comfortable throughout her illness. A very special thank you to Isabel Gonçalves who always went above and beyond in caring for Maria and her family.
Maria's mass with her cremains will take place on Tuesday October 30 at Mt. Carmel Church at 10:30 am anyone wishing to attend is asked to meet directly to church.
Arrangements placed in the care of Perry Funeral Home 111 Dartmouth St. New Bedford, Ma 02740.
