PORTLAND- Robert Edward Horne II (Rob), age 43 of Portland, Maine passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 2nd, at 4:50PM, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough, ME after a long battle with cancer.
Rob liked to joke and had most of his friends believe he was born on April 1st, 1975 but his real birthdate was April 28th, 1975. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida where he grew up with his family. Robert had a curious mind and researched diligently all of what he was passionate about.
Rob was an integral part of the addiction recovery community and had many very close relationships with people in recovery. In most ways, these people were his family and he theirs. Rob came to Maine to start a new life and did that successfully with the help of a treatment program that offered him help despite not being able to pay.
In recovery, Rob developed many hobbies. He taught himself to master the piano while volunteering at a self-help group, he played the drums, wrote poetry, loved fishing, the outdoors, and learning how to live in the wild. One example of this is that, Rob was passionate about survival skills and while camping, would make himself fishing poles from found materials. He was strong in all ways and particularly enjoyed working out at the gym but his largest strength was his joy of spending time with his son, Alex, who moved to Maine to be close to him.
He is survived by his son Alex of Portland, ME, his two grandchildren, and he was loved dearly by everyone who knew him; his team of doctors, his family, his recovery family, and his many friends.
His service will be held on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 from 4-7 PM at the Immanuel Baptist Church located at 156 High St, Portland, Maine 04101
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Gosnell Memorial Hospice in Scarborough, Maine, the Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center, and/or the Portland Recovery Community Center. A special thank you to Dr. Wrona and his wonderful sidekick Kathy, the New England Cancer Specialists, the Gosnell House, and the many friends who helped with Rob’s appointments for treatment. We would also like to extend a very special thank you to those who considered Rob family by choice and selflessly stayed by his side for his stay at the Gosnell House.
