FAIRHAVEN -- Randall F. "Monk" Mendell, 87, of Fairhaven died unexpectedly at home Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005. He was the husband of Natalie L. (Morelli) Mendell.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late David F. and Martha E. (Demoranville) Mendell. He lived in this community all his life.
He graduated from New Bedford High School, where he excelled in football. He later played for and coached the Murphy Club.
Mr. Mendell was president of Cornish Insurance Co. until he retired.
An avid antique car collector, he also was a marksman and a member of the New Bedford Rod and Gun Club and the Copicut Rifle Association. He was a longtime member of the Wamsutta Club.
Mr. Mendell enjoyed spending time at his retirement home at Safety Harbor in Clearwater, Fla.
Survivors include his widow; two sons, David L. Mendell and Randall C. Mendell, both of Fairhaven; a daughter, Susan Benson of Jacksonville, Fla.; many grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Charles H. Russell.
His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday December 16, 2005 at River-Side Cemetery, Fairhaven, Ma.
Visiting hours at the Wilson Chapel Sunday December 11 from 5-8 p.m.
