Obituary

Crevo, Charles C. Ph.D., P.E. 85 of Wellesley passed away on October 2, 2018 with his family at his side. He was the loving husband of Rosalie (DeBaggis) Crevo of Wellesley. Mr. Crevo was the son of the late James and Inez (Santoro) Crevo of Italy and Franklin, MA; and the brother of the late Robert Crevo of Burlington, MA. Mr. Crevo was the devoted father to Charles A. Crevo of Wellesley; Julie Pernokas and husband Dr. Mark Pernokas of Wellesley; and Susan Steneri and husband Andrew Steneri of Wayland. He adored his grandchildren, Andrew and Alexander Pernokas of Wellesley, and Isabel and Matthew Steneri of Wayland, his nieces, nephews, cousins, and life- long friends.

Mr. Crevo was born and raised in Franklin, MA. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1951 where he was a three- sport athlete. Upon graduating from high school, he built homes in the Franklin area. He was a talented builder, a skill he treasured and used to design and build many homes over the years.

Mr. Crevo was a veteran of the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado and was recruited to play on the Army football team. He was assigned to the ski maneuver unit in the Colorado Rockies, and was trained to patrol and protect mountainous terrain. That training included rock and cliff hiking during the day and survival training at night. Upon honorable discharge, he attended Colorado College on a football scholarship, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. In 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Rosalie, and together they lived in the married dorms on campus at UMass Amherst. While at UMass, Mr. Crevo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and played on the football and wrestling teams.

From the onset of his career, he worked for the CT Department of Transportation, and during that time received a Certificate from the Bureau of Highway Traffic from Yale University. Following his employment in CT, he moved his family to Warwick, RI and became Chief Transportation Engineer for the Statewide Planning Program.

In 1967, the family moved to MA, settling in Burlington, where he held a position at IBM and later became an independent consultant to the New England Regional Commission. He was responsible for conducting the feasibility study for the East-West Highway, a major highway proposed through Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. He later joined an engineering colleague and together they formed Urban Transportation Systems Associates (U.T.S.A.) located in Newton, MA. While residing in Burlington, he was elected to the Town Planning Board and was active throughout the community. In 1979, he earned a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning from Boston University.

The family moved to Wellesley in 1985. During his long career that followed, he worked for several engineering firms and was known as an expert in Transportation Planning and Engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in twelve states, published numerous studies, and conducted traffic analyses throughout New England, the United States, Chile, El Salvador, and Venezuela. Prior to working in Latin America, he taught himself to speak Spanish. He was a member of the Institute of Traffic Engineers where he served as Chairman for both, the Inventory Forecasting Division and Land Use Inventory Committee. In 1990, he earned a PhD in Civil Engineering from UMass Amherst. He was an adjunct professor at UMass Lowell where he taught graduate level courses. After a 45-year career in his field, he founded C3 Consulting Engineers in Wellesley, working mostly for the Martha’s Vineyard Commission reviewing proposed development projects. He served on the Wellesley Permanent Building Committee during the planning and development for the Warren School Recreation Department and new town library building projects.

Above all, Mr. Crevo’s greatest joy was spending time with his family. He practiced his profound faith as a member of St. Paul Church in Wellesley. As a young father, he coached hockey and baseball teams, and attended every dance recital. As a proud grandfather, he attended all his grandchildren’s games and activities. In his later years on the weekends, he could be found tending to his lawn, boating, golfing, fishing, and exercising. He enjoyed many summer vacations in Falmouth with family and friends. He had a love for vintage cars and owned a special collection throughout the years. He also had a passion for making wine that earned him three gold medals.

Mr. Crevo, known as Charlie to his friends, will be forever remembered for his devotion to his family, his kindness, steadiness, and strong work ethic. Those who knew him often said of him – he was a really great guy, a real gentleman, and had a strong hand shake. He will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to have known him.
