Louis Roland Moreau, 95, of New Bedford passed away on Friday September 28, 2018 at home surrounded by his loved ones.
Louis R. was born in Attleboro on December 12, 1922, to Joseph T. and Louise (LaCroix) Moreau. He graduated from New Bedford High School and on August 2, 1942 he married Dorothy M. Higgins, the love of his life. He began active duty, serving in the 3502nd Army Air Force Base Unit from 1942-1945, with engagements in the Rhineland, the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and the Air Offensive of Europe. He was a New Bedford firefighter for 30 years, retiring in 1978. He also served on the Fire Department’s first Search and Rescue Scuba Diving Team.
Louis R. enjoyed spending his free time on or near the ocean, boating, fishing, scuba diving and spending time on Cuttyhunk, where he had met his wife. He was an avid reader, with an eclectic interest in many subjects. He was a knife collector and was interested in photography and nature. Most of all, Louis R. loved spending time with his family, where he would entertain them with his dry sense of humor and wit. His strong, but kind spirit and unwavering faith, will be sorely missed, by all who were blessed to have known him.
He is survived by his daughters Dorothy A. Cavender of Bourne and Ellen L. Moreau of New Bedford, a son and daughter-in-law, Mark R. and Kristen of Lakeville, four grandchildren Raymond (Skip) Sylvia, Alex Castaldi, Kira Moreau and Matthew Moreau and one great-granddaughter Maegan Sylvia.
His visitation will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 1-3 p.m. at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, with a Memorial Service to celebrate his life beginning at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Louis’ remembrance to the New Bedford Fire Museum, 51 Bedford St., New Bedford, MA 02740.
