George L. Herman of Medford passed away peacefully of natural causes in his home with family by his side, on Thursday September 27. A native of Cambridge, was a graduate of Rindge Tech and Northeastern University. An Aircraft Engineer, as well as a Naval Aviator flying torpedo bombers in the Pacific campaign during WWII, fighters during the Korean War, and various aircraft including Saber Jets during the Cold War, retiring after 23 years as a Commander, Mr. Herman exhibited a lifelong passion for airplanes only superseded by his passion for his late wife, Loretta, with whom he enjoyed 75 years. Though she sometimes wondered if he loved the Bruins more than her.
George and Loretta, nee McGowan, leave five children: Linda Solomon, with her husband Dr. Michael Solomon of Princeton N.J.; Lawrence Herman with his partner David Geller of Fairfax VA.; Rachel Herman of Billerica; Lori Michel with her husband Peter Michel of Palo Alto CA.; and Nancy Barbuti with her husband Michael Barbuti of Haymarket VA. George was the loving grandfather of Andrew Solomon, Amy Solomon, Zachary Herman, Michael Barbuti, and Olivia Barbuti. Great-grandfather of Andrew and Kristen’s Emma, Abigail, and Will Solomon, and Amy and Alonso’s Rosa, Loretta, and Mauricio Solomon-Vargas.
Mr. Herman was the son of the late Louis and Isabel (Stanley) Herman, and brother of Clarabelle Allen, Gert LeGere, Lawrence Herman, and Robert Herman.
He will be missed.
