Obituary

Joao M. "Djandjan" Gonsalves, 93, of New Bedford died September 21, 2018 peacefully at home.
He was the husband of Judith (Pina Barros) Gonsalves and the late Mary D. (Cosmo) "Maymie" Gonsalves.
Born and raised in Brava, Cape Verde, son of the late Manuel A. and Matilda L. (Lomba) Gonsalves, he lived in Jersey City, NJ before moving to New Bedford.
Mr. Gonsalves was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
He was formerly employed as a merchant mariner with Exxon and Moran Company for many years until his retirement.
Mr. Gonsalves enjoyed raising show pigeons.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael "Mickey" Gonsalves of New Bedford; 2 daughters, Linda Almeida of New Bedford and Patricia "Patsy" Clay and her husband William "Lacy" Clay of Falls Church, VA; a step-son, Domingo Casino and his wife Brenda of Florida; a step-daughter, Awilda Avelino and her husband Jose of Taunton; a sister, Ana Valles of New Bedford; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late John "Nunui" Gonsalves and the brother of the late Antonio Goncalves and Lourenco Gonsalves.
His Funeral will be held on Monday, September 24th at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 11 AM. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, September 23rd from 4-8 PM.
