Obituary

Joseph Patrick Langan a lifelong resident of Charlestown died on Sunday December 4, 2005 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a lengthy illness. He was 77 years old.

Joe was born in Charlestown on February 29, 1928 and grew up there while he attended Boston Public Schools and Charlestown High School. He enlisted into the United States Army on November 28, 1945 and served during World War 2 and the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on June 9, 1954 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. Following his discharge he began working at the Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown as a laborer. Also in 1954 he joined the International Longshoreman's Association and worked for thier Local Union # 799. He retired from the Boston Naval Shipyard in 1971 and the Longshoreman's Union in 1995. Joe is a member of the Halligan Club in Charlestown, the Old Charlestown Schoolboy's Association and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter # 22.

Joe is the beloved husband of the late Mary P. "Patsy" (Mullen) Langan. He is the devoted father of Joseph P. Langan Jr. and his wife Karen of Charlestown, Patricia M. Leahy and her husband Michael of Dorchester and Grace A. McLaughlin and her husband Steven of Charlestown. He is the loving "Gramps" of Kimberly, Erin, Patrick, Billy, Dennis, Conor, Brittany and Teaghan and his great-grandaughter Taylor. He is the brother of Thomas Langan and Esther Driscoll both of Needham and the late James, John and David Langan. Dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.

Joe's Funeral will be held on Saturday December 10, 2005 from the Frank H. Carr Funeral Home 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 9 am. followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Joe will be held on Friday December 9, 2005 from 3 to 8 pm. Burial wiil take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
