LYMAN- Lowell “Red” Goodwin, 89, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2018. He was the fourth of five children of Jasper and Rena Goodwin of Springvale. Red fought the fires of ‘47 with the Salvation Army and then enlisted into the Air Force where he was an airplane mechanic during the Korean War. When he returned home he met and married his love, Thelma and adopted her daughter. Together they had two more daughters and a son, Robert, who had the same fiery-Red hair as his dad.
Red worked at Aerofab in Sanford on their amphibious plane and from 1974 until his retirement in 1993, in Shop 17 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was a very kind and generous man who always helped everyone, no questions asked.
He is predeceased by his precious son, Robert, his wife Thelma, his brothers Robert, Fred and (presumably) Warren and sister, Pat Erickson of Portland. He is survived by his three daughters, Deborah of Sanford, Christine and her husband Keith Lacroix of Sanford, their children, Robert and his wife Amanda of Sanford, Faith and her husband Eric Yates of Sanford, his daughter Sandra and her husband Steven Merrill of Lyman, their children, April Chappell, Amanda and her husband Joseph Chenevert of Rochester, NH, April Libby and her wife Jess of Waterboro and Shelley Blackburn and her friend Steve of Sebago, seven great-grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren and several nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the following organizations who helped to make the end of Red’s life more enjoyable: The Sam L. Cohen Center of Biddeford, The Veterans Association, The Visiting Nurses Association, especially his nurse Sarah, Honor Flight of Maine and all of the Chaplains and volunteers from VNA, Hospice and Mercy Hospital on State Street.
A graveside service with USAF Honors will be held on Saturday September 29th at 1 PM at Highland Grove in Shapleigh.
