John F. Sylva, 71

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

John F. Sylva, age 71, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Boston Medical Center Newton Pavilion. He was the beloved husband of Roberta L. (Jones) Sylva, to whom he was wed on September 30, 1972.

Born in Everett, MA on June 7, 1947, he was a loving son of Margaret M. (Flynn) Sylva of Everett and the late Gilbert F. Sylva, Sr.

John grew up in Everett and was a 1965 graduate of Everett Vocational High School. He furthered his studies, graduating in 1967 from the Coyne Electrical and Technical School, and then served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

A resident of Mansfield for the past forty-two years, Mr. Sylva was employed as an electrician for the Foxboro Co. He began his career at the East Bridgewater plant and retired from the companies Foxboro location.

John was a former member of the City Council #97 Knights of Columbus in Everett. His family was truly the essence of his life and he especially treasured times spent with his grandchildren. John also loved spending summer months at the beach on Buttermilk Bay and winters spent snowmobiling in New Hampshire.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his devoted children: Sean P. Sylva and his fiancé Mary Cleaves of Mansfield, Robyn M. Bramanti and her husband Frankie of Lakeville, and Patrick M. Sylva and his wife Lyndsey of Raynham. He was the cherished grandfather of Jeffrey, Sophia, Nathan and Sarah. He was the dear brother of Gilbert F. Sylva, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Malden, Anne M. Doran and her husband Frank of Everett, and the late Margaret “Peggy” Sylva, and the late Steven J. Sylva and his late wife Arlene. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Jason Jones and his longtime companion Ann Barry of Taunton, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, September 27th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.

A service will be held at the conclusion of visitation on Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
