Obituary

Mr. George D. White, Jr., of Medford and beloved husband of the late Margaret E. (Jones) passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Monday, September 17, 2018. He was 89 years old.

Born in Mathews, Virginia, he was the beloved son of the late George D. and Lucille E. (Lowry) White. Mr. White was a US Navy veteran, entering the military at Brooklyn, New York and receiving his honorable discharge from the US Naval Station in Newport Rhode Island on August 6, 1965. Mr. White attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Award for his exemplary service. A graduate of Northeastern University, George retired from the FAA as Senior Regional Personnel  Manager.

George was an avid boater and was Secretary of the Mystic Wellington Yacht Club, loved listening to country music and watching his Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics. He loved traveling to New York to attend Broadway plays with his buddy, Cliff Weeks. He was a former president of Wellington Glenwood Baseball in Medford, a member of the Medford School Committee from 1972 to 1978 and active in the First Community United Methodist Church in Medford. He was also awarded the Medford Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year Award” in 2001. Above all, George was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.

George is survived by his loving children; Dr. Sheila L. White-Jackson of Desoto, Texas, Gregory S. and his wife Marjorie “Rose” White of Beaumont, California, George D., III, and his wife Dorothea A. White of Medford, James R. White of Melrose, Deb V. and her husband Curtis V. Caldwell of Billerica, Denise J. and her husband Eddie L. Bynum of Peabody, Joseph C. and his wife Elaine White of Somerville, Gerald P. White of Medford and Rita Thompkins of Mathews, Virginia, sisters; Ruth Duke of Virginia Beach, Evelyn Brissette of Petersburg, Virginia and Dr. Sylvia Keene of Washington, DC, 31 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. George was also the grandfather of the late Gerald Kyle White and father-in-law of the late Diane E. White.

His funeral service will be celebrated in the First United Methodist Church, 55 Otis Street, Medford on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Visiting hours will be held in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford on Friday, September 21, 2018, from 4 to 8 PM. Interment will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
