Donald P. Zecher, age 87, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the beloved husband of Joanne S. Zecher, to whom he was wed on October 31, 1953.
Born in Bronx, New York on June 29, 1931, he was a loving son of the late Earl P. and Marie M. (Hunzinger0 Zecher.
Donald grew up Mansfield and was a 1949 graduate of Mansfield High School. He continued his education and graduated in 1953 from Brown the University, the same year he married Joanne and began proudly serving his country as a member of the United States Army.
Mr. Zecher was a prominent businessman and well-respected person in the Mansfield community, where he lived most of his life. Along with his family, he formally owned and operated the Old Country Store, a landmark in West Mansfield Village, which was started in 1960 by his father.
Don was a former member and past president of the Mansfield Rotary Club and recipient of the distinguished Paul Harris Fellowship Award. His other memberships included serving on the Mansfield Bicentennial Committee, the Mansfield Airport Commission, where he also held his private pilot’s license and was a member of the Board of Directors at North Easton Savings Bank.
Donald loved spending time with family and friends. He was a simple man who enjoyed fishing, vacationing in Maine and all the beauty that nature had to offer. He and Joanne also traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted children: Eric P. Zecher and his wife Patricia of Norton, Bret E. Zecher and his wife Pati of Mansfield, and Karen S. Buckley and her husband Dennis of Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He was the adoring grandfather of Courtney Tierney of Mansfield, Nicholas Zecher of Mansfield, Jacob Buckley of Japan, Daniel Buckley of Newton and the great grandfather of Sydney Tierney. He was the brother of John E. Zecher of Middlebury, Vermont, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday, September 13th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
Funeral services, along with burial at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield will be held privately at the convenience of his family.
