Anthony S. Zielinski Jr., 87, of Fairhaven went home to the Lord on Thursday September 6, 2018. He is the husband of the late Marguerite A. (Daley) Zielinski.
Born in New Bedford, the son of Anthony S. and Stella (Pabis) Zielinski, he resided most of his life in Dartmouth.
Anthony graduated from New Bedford High School, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and Portia Law School. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served aboard the carrier USS Tarawa CAA-4 in the navigation department. He retired in 1974 as an active naval officer with the rank of Commander, USNR.
Anthony was elected at large to the New Bedford City Council in 1961 where he served three terms. He taught in the history department at New Bedford High School for 25 years until his retirement.
A member of Reservation Golf Club for many years, he shot a hole-in-one on the 67th birthday.
He is survived by his five children and spouses, Kathryn and Kevin McNeil, Mark and Cathy, David and Patricia, Amy and Doug Oberle, and Peter and Joyce; his sister, Lillian Imhof; his seven beloved grandchildren, Courtney, Caitlyn, Collin, Sarah, Noelle, Claire, and Marguerite; his brother-in-law, Bruno Repeta; his sister-in-law, Joan Daley; his lifelong friends John Borowicz and Aubrey Pothier; three nieces and a nephew; and his great-grand dog, Finley.
He was the brother of the late Richard Zielinski, Dorothy Remillard, and Virginia Shurtleff.
The family would like to thank A.J. and the staff at Sacred Heart Home and Beacon Hospice for the excellent care he received as a resident there.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday September 15, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Julie Billiart Church, North Dartmouth. Burial with military honors will follow at Cushing Cemetery in Mattapoisett. Visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers, Anthony asks that you “do something nice for someone”.
