Obituary

DORIS ELIZABETH (MITCHELSON) EVANS, age 86, of Hingham, died on Saturday, Nov. 19th at the Quincy Medical Center after a brief illness. Wife of the late Clyde L. Evans, mother of the late Peter D. Evans, sister of the late Mary Endicott and the late Harry Mitchelson, Jr. She is survived by her nephews; Richard L. Evans of Hingham, Kenneth L. Evans of Hanover, David H. Mitchelson of Hingham and Paul Mitchelson of Quincy.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 17th at 11 AM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043. Rather than flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Church of St. John the Evangelist. The interment will be private.
Her parents, Sarah Kidd and Harry Mitchelson immigrated from Scotland to be sure that their family would grow up in the United States. As a result, Mrs. Evans was born and raised in Quincy.
Mrs. Evans was determined to join the Navy during World War II and after being turned down twice because she was too small, she stuffed tissues in her shoes and ate a meal of bananas to make the weight and height requirements. She was a Pharmacist Mate Second Class, serving in Hawaii. She was most proud to be a veteran and of her time in the Navy. She was active in the National Waves Organization and the Women in Military Service Organization in America for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Evans met Clyde Evans in 1945 and they were married on December 9, 1946. They were married for 46 years and her greatest joy in life was her son Peter.
Mrs. Evans managed the New England Art Outlet Store for over 25 years as well as helping her husband operate New England Art Publishers, Inc., located at 10 Railroad St., North Abington. Her husband founded the company in 1926 and Mrs. Evans was especially proud that it is now a third generation family business, a rarity in today's business climate. She was a board member of the company for over 40 years.
In addition to her company involvement, she volunteered for many years with the Family Service Center and Navy Relief at the Naval Air Station in South Weymouth until its closing. The commanding officer dedicated Air Expo '92' to Mrs. Evans in recognition of the time and effort she put into a variety of air station causes.
Mrs. Evans loved musical theatre and along with her husband was a founding member of the South Shore Playhouse Associates, the parent company for both the South Shore Music Circus and Cape Cod Melody Tent. She has served as a trustee of this organization for many years.
She was at home near the sea and was proud that she navigated the New York Time crossword each and every Sunday unassisted.
Mrs. Evans was an active member of the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Hingham for over 50 years and a former member of the Neighborhood Club in Quincy and the Scituate Harbor Yacht Club.
