Obituary

SPENCER: Gerald G. "Jerry" Newell, 89, of Lincoln St., died peacefully Sunday, August 26th at St. Mary's Healthcare in Worcester after a long illness.
He leaves his caring wife of 65 years, Noreen (Allen) Newell, his devoted daughters Elizabeth A. Newell of Barre, Kathryn M. Stewart and her husband James, and Margaret B. Pillsbury all of Spencer, his son Michael A. Newell and his wife Lori of Ohio, sisters Eleanor Broughton and Carolyn Hale both of Ossipee, NH, and Virginia Stotz and her husband Norman of Sterling. He also leaves his grandchildren; Jeffrey Newell of Gloucester, Allen Bercume and his wife Megan of Charlton, Bryan Bercume and his wife Jenny of Rutland, Eric Bercume and his wife Lindsey of Ashville, NC, Emily Stewart of Worcester, Megan Stewart of Boston, Andrew Pillsbury and his wife Jessica of E.Brookfield and Matthew Pillsbury of Worcester, three great grandchildren; Marshall, Mallory, and Madeline Bercume and two "soon to be" great grandchildren, his daughter in law Mary Pepin and her husband Robert of Warren. He is predeceased by his grandson Patrick Newell in 2004.
He was born in Spencer, MA on March 25, 1929, son of the late Gerald G. and Carolyn (Fletcher) Newell, Jr. He was a graduate of David Prouty High School in Spencer. He later proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the Gaudette-Kirk Post 138 American Legion.
Jerry was owner and operator of the former "Newell's News Etc." , distributor of the Telegram & Gazette on Main St. in Spencer for 25 years, retiring in 1997.
Jerry was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Spencer, former volunteer fireman, charter member of the Spencer Rescue Squad, and later board member and Treasurer. He was a former corporator of Spencer Savings Bank. Jerry was first and foremost a family man. He loved spending time enjoying the beautiful home he created. His craftsmanship was evident in not only his stonewalls but his beautiful holiday mangers. If Jerry wasn't spending time with family, he could be found cheering on the Red Sox, Bruins, or the Patriots in his recliner.
Friends are invited to attend funeral services for Jerry at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, in the First Congregational Church of Spencer, 205 Main St., Spencer. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer. There are no calling hours.
